It is also one of many casino games that are fairly easy to pick up without needing hours and hours to decipher complex rules and practice before you start playing. You can even play blackjack games from home, using an online casino with many different variations of the game available. So, where did this phenomenon originate and who do we have to thank for it?

Where did blackjack first originate?

The general consensus is that the game started off life in French casinos circa 1700. It went by the name of Vingt-et-Un, (or 21 if you're not fluent in French!). However, there are also some views that the Romans were responsible for bringing this great game into the lives of so many.

It arrived in America when French colonists brought it over, and then when Nevada became the first state to legalize gambling, 21 (as it was still called at this point) became popular with American gamblers.

Where did the name 'Blackjack' derive from?

It is believed that the name came about based on the special bonus that players obtained when they had a combination of the Ace of Spades and a black Jack. This bonus rule has been removed from the game but the name remains.

Online casinos

In the mid-1990s, as the internet became more widely used across the world, online games including blackjack became available. The first online versions of the game were very basic but allowed players to play blackjack for money, without leaving their home. Since then, online casino games have become much more sophisticated in line with the advances in technology we have experienced.

Today, playing online blackjack is almost as realistic as being at a land-based casino, with live blackjack variants allowing real dealers in real-time to interact with players through high-quality, fast video streaming through 4G and 5G for mobile users. Many online casinos offer different variations of the game to suit different types of players, with blackjack being one of the most popular online casino games along with poker and roulette.

Virtual Reality technology has also enhanced the experience of playing online casino games such as blackjack, with players being able to wear VR headsets for a totally immersive 3D experience simulating being in a live casino. This has added another element to blackjack that helps to attract new players across different generations. If someone wants to have a go at online gambling as a beginner, blackjack is the ideal game to quickly learn and get started playing straight away without the need for lots of practice first.

Blackjack's popularity never seems to fade, and technology continues to enhance the game to keep it exciting and relevant.
