Believe it or not, there are currently around 70 variants of poker. So we mean the official versions, which you can meet in some casino. This number is also increased every year because if someone comes up with a new game, 80% is another Poker-based game.
You can play most of them only in big casinos, and it happens by chance. There is no need for one to remember them all. On the other hand, every good player should know at least the basic ones.
The Basic Classification of Poker
Poker games can be divided into 3 large groups:
- Draw poker
- Stud poker
- Community Card poker
In the end, the goal is the same with all of them – Create the highest hand combination, from high card to royal flush.
This is the original version of poker, in which a player receives 5 or 7 cards and then tries to make a 5-card hand from those cards. The game starts with ante bet and blinds. Then the cards are dealt, and the first betting round begins. Subsequently, players may replace a certain number of cards (depending on the poker variant), and the next round of betting begins. Once everyone bet, the cards are turned, and the player with the highest hand wins.
The most played draw poker is Five Card Draw poker. It is also the simplest version. Quite popular are also versions of Jack or Better, which you can play online as video poker.
Stud is a set of poker variants in which a player receives face-down cards and face-up cards. All players at the table can see the face-up cards. This is a so-called non-positional game, which means that the dealer is given and does not change during the game. At least at the official tournaments and at the casino. Until the 1980s, Stud poker was the most popular version of poker. Later, however, it was popularly overtaken by the community card versions or Community Card Poker.
Most often, you will encounter Seven Card Stud poker. It starts by giving each player 3 cards. One visible and two with faces down. Subsequently, the first bets are placed, after which the players are dealt with the 4th card (face-up). The game continues with next rounds of bets and more face-up cards. The goal, as always, is to create the highest 5-card poker hand.
Other popular stud poker variations are Razz, which is practically Seven Card Stud, with the only difference that the lowest hand wins. In online casinos, Carribean Stud poker is often offered, where the player has all the cards exposed, and the players bet against the dealer and not against each other.
Community Card Poker
The community card version of poker is the last large group of games that officially exist. The most famous member in this family is Texas Hold’em poker, which has been the most played poker game in the world for over 20 years, both in land-based and online casinos. It is recognised for major poker tournaments such as the World Poker Tour or the World Series of Poker. So if someone asks you if you are going to play poker, it is probably Texas Hold’em.
Unlike Seven Stud, Texas Hold’em is a positional game. The card dealer functions move clockwise by players. The game begins with the dealer, and the player on his left put a small and a big blind. Then the two cards are dealt down, followed by the first betting round. Once everyone bet, the dealer burns the top card and puts 3 community cards on the table.
Similar to Seven Stud, the bet-card sequence on the table follows until there are 5 cards. Then the last round of betting begins, and the player who manages to gather the highest hand of his two hand cards and the three selected cards on the table wins.
Another prevalent form of community card poker is Omaha Hold’em. This is very similar to Texas, except that players are dealt four cards instead of two. From these 4 cards, they choose 2 and using the other 3 cards on the table, they form combinations.
