Why Does the Banker Win More Often in Baccarat?

More experienced baccarat players know that a bet on the banker is a little more favourable than a bet on the player. Both are among the best bets in the casino. The house edge is 1.24% for the player bet and 1.06 for the banker bet.

The banker bet also wins far more often than it loses. Considering all possible results:

The banker will win 45.86% of the games

Player 44.62% of games

9.52% of games will be a tie.

Apart from the tie, the banker wins 50.68% of the games and the player 49.32% of the games.

The casino gains the house edge from the banker bet by taking a 5% commission on each amount paid out. If a casino did not take a commission, there would be an advantage for the player.

What Is Behind the Banker's Advantage?

But why does the banker bet win more often? What rule makes bankers get 9 more often?

Let's take a look at the rules for baccarat. If a player or dealer receives a total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards, this is considered as natural and no more cards are dealt. If neither side gets natural, the player's first hand is played. The player stands on the sum of 6 or 7. For 5 or less, the player hits.

  • The banker stands at 7, 8 and 9. But the other hands are played according to the player's hand.
  • If the player is standing, the banker draws for 5 or less.
  • If a player draws a third card, the banker always draws on 0, 1, 2 or 3.
  • Must draw on 3 whenever the player's third card is anything but 8.
  • Must draw on 4 if the player's third card is from 2 to 7.
  • Must draw on 5 if the player's card is 4 to 7.
  • Must draw to 6 when the player's third card is 6 or 7.

The main difference between the player's and the banker's strategy is evident at first sight. In most cases, the banker plays according to the combination of the player. The banker draws a third card if a player draws a card that helps him. And that is the difference in the frequency of winnings.

The Similarity of Baccarat and Blackjack

In a way, we can compare baccarat to blackjack. In the case of blackjack, the casino's advantage is that the dealer plays after players. Once a player bust, the dealer wins and doesn't matter what combination he has. So if both the dealer and the player bust, the dealer wins anyway because the player has bust before. There is no other casino benefit for blackjack.

But with baccarat, you can't bust. You must get as close as possible to the sum of 9. So if you get cards of 2 and 3, you have a sum of 5. The next card is 9. Your final value is not 14, but only 4. The first digit of the sum above 10 is deleted.

Different House Edge

Some sources report that the house edge value for banker and player bets is 1.17% and 1.36%, respectively. Yes, they are right, but this only applies to a game where we only take the winnings of a banker or a player, i.e. without ties.

But we prefer statistics that include ties. The house edge, in this case, is 1.24% per player and 1.06% per banker. If you bet $ 10 a thousand times on a banker, you lose on average $ 106. If you bet $ 10 thousand times on player, you lose on average $ 124.

To determine the average loss value per player bet, we need to determine the percentage of games that will result in a tie.

The Ideal Game for Beginners

But, to sums it up. The betting on the banker and the player are one of the most advantageous bets. You don't need any experience, and you don't need to know any baccarat strategy. If you want to be successful at blackjack, you have to play according to the perfect strategy. You have to bet pass or don't pass bets plus Odds on craps. But with baccarat, all you have to do is bet. That is why baccarat is the most popular and played casino game on high-limits tables.
